Using GPS

Note: GPS is only available with the Mesa Geo units and in version 2.16 or later of the software

DIPPlus can receive position fixes from the build-in GPS receiver in the Geo model of the Juniper Mesa Notepad. It can then indicate your approximated location on the blast plan.

To use the GPS, DIPPlus needs to know how to convert a GPS position (latitude and longitude) into the blast coordinate system used by the mine site. It does this by using the site's map configuration parameters defined in BlastIQ. These parameters are downloaded from BlastIQ as a text file, and then imported into DIPPlus by uploading the text file to the Mesa Geo.

 

Download the map configuration file from BlastIQ:

1. Log into your BlastIQ account.

2. Select the mine site at which DIPPlus is to be used.

3. Click Site Map on the menu bar.

4. Click the Download Map Config. If this option is not present, click Edit Map Configuration and specify the coordinate transformation used by the mine site.

5. The map configuration file will be downloaded to your computer. It will have a file name of the form 'site_config.xml'.

 

Upload the map configuration file to DIPPlus

1. Connect the Mesa Geo to your computer and wait for it to be detected.

2. In Windows Explorer, right-click on the map config file you downloaded and choose Send To / Mobile Device. Choose My Documents as the destination folder on the device. If this option is not available, copy and paste the map config file into the My Documents folder on the unit.

3. Run DIPPlus and it will import the map config file automatically at startup. A message will be displayed indicating whether the file was imported successfully.

NOTE: You do not have to quit and re-run DIPPlus to import map files. If DIPPlus is already running, simply go to the GPS tab under General Options and click Import New Map File after uploading the config file to My Documents.

 

Enabling the GPS receiver

1. In DIPPlus, tap Menu / Options / General Options and select the GPS tab.

2. Confirm that the map configuration file for your site is selected in the drop-down list.

3. Tick 'Enable GPS'.

4. Tap the Save button on the toolbar.

5. Tap the Close button on the toolbar.

After enabling the GPS receiver, it may take a minute or two to obtain an initial fix. The device requires a clear view of the sky in order to receive signals from as many satellites as possible.

When you view the blast plan in DIPPlus, your approximate location will be indicated by an orange circle whose radius is equal to the fix accuracy (or, more correctly, the precision) calculated by the built-in GPS receiver.

Note:  Your true location on the blast may not be within the orange circle. GPS accuracy is a statistical measure and the error circle will only contain your true location for a certain percentage of the time. Under favourable conditions this percentage could be above 90% but there is always a non-zero probability that your true location is outside the reported radius.

GPS status is displayed in the bottom left corner of the blast plan, along with the number of satellites and approximate fix accuracy. The fix is classified as good, poor or bad according to the reported accuracy value:

  • If accuracy is less than or equal to 5m then the fix is classed as 'good'
  • If accuracy is between 5m and 10m then the fix is classed as 'poor'
  • If the accuracy is greater than 10m then the fix is classed as 'bad'

Note: The receiver in the Mesa Geo can only receive signals from GPS satellites, not from the GLONASS (Russian), BeiDou (Chinese) or Galileo (European) systems.
